Strong southerly winds tend to concentrate migrating raptors along the lake shore, and usually keeps them low as they avoid getting blown out over the lake. Light winds make them go higher, as do ‘tail winds’, i.e. west-southwest winds for birds that are going east-northeast over Derby Hill.

In November, many of the northern raptors that winter in the eastern Lake Ontario and western St. Lawrence region are settling in. Mouse raptors, including Rough-legged Hawk, Northern Harrier, and Short-eared Owl, will be passing through. If it’s a good year for an abundance of meadow vole and other small mammal prey, many will winter with us.
On average 40,000 raptors are counted each spring as they migrate northwards, making this site one of the best spring sites in the country. Hawks, eagles and vultures are the main attraction at Derby Hill, but impressive numbers of Snow Geese, Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles can also be seen migrating here.
