A large carved and painted wood painting frame with squared molding, each of the four sides bearing an inner raised band of carved repeating cyma curve scrolls extending outward from central scrolls with similar embellishments to each molding end, allover with copper to bronze lustrous painted finish.

Arthur Mathews, working with a small group of craftsmen, designed most of the furniture and accessories, while Lucia Mathews assisted with the design, supervised the color palette, and probably executed some of the painted decoration. The "artistic furniture" they produced is characterized by quality craftsmanship and small shop traditions.
In 1906, Arts and Crafts followers Arthur Mathews (1850-1945) and his wife Lucia Mathews (1870-1955) started producing hand-made furniture and decorative house wares in a small San Francisco workshop named The Furniture Shop.
