Oct 15, 2020 · For almost 130 years, the Barr Smith Library has been treasured by students past and present as the University of Adelaide’s iconic centre. From the serenity of the Barr Smith Reading Room, to the ever-helpful staff, the Library is more than a place to study and access resources, it’s an opportunity to escape the pressures and noise of student life.
The University of Adelaide Library originated in the Mitchell Building in the 1890's. Robert Barr Smith provided a number of gifts, totalling 9,000 pounds over the years 1892-1911 for the purchase of books. In 1899, the University Council decided to name the library after one of its greatest benefactors, Robert Barr Smith.
