- Man of Steel (2013) An unfortunate constant in Zimmer’s career is that his scores are often better than the movies to which they belong: take, for instance, “The Da Vinci Code,” a spectacularly stupid film that features one of the composer’s greatest cues, “Chevaliers De Sangreal.”
- The Last Samurai (2003) One of the many downsides of Hollywood’s virtual extinction of big-budget historical epics is that the great composers of new generations have been denied the opportunity to create more lavish and expansive orchestral scores, the kind of which these are made for and that have resulted in some of the best film music of all time (just think of Miklós Rózsa’s work in “Ben Hur” or Maurice Jarre’s in “Lawrence of Arabia”).
- Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Zimmer has cited Vangelis’ music for the original “Blade Runner” as one of his top three favorite movie scores of all time.

- Gladiator. Since the film’s release, Gladiator has gone on to achieve legendary status for Zimmer, from the beautiful, otherworldly ‘Elysium’ to the epic orchestral ‘Honour Him’.
- Pirates of the Caribbean. Zimmer collaborated with Klaus Badelt on ‘The Curse of the Black Pearl’, writing the film’s main themes as a duo. Although critics berated the composers’ work for its lack of connections to the ‘swashbuckling’ genre, Zimmer and Badelt succeeded in creating a score which is both epically beautiful and cheekily evocative of the unpredictable Captain Jack.
- Sherlock Holmes. Zimmer famously made use of (and was personally responsible for trashing!) a broken pub piano in his soundtrack to Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes remake.
- Inception. Unbelievably, Zimmer revealed his entire score for the Christopher Nolan film originated from Edith Piaf’s song ‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’ – from the thunderous trombone theme to the threatening semitone-based melody in the violins.
- The Dark Knight (2008) Hans Zimmer has scored every one of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, 2005’s Batman Begins to 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises and even shares a composer credit with Junkie XL on the Nolan-produced Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice if you really want to get technical.
- The Lion King (1994) Disney has always been happy to have Hans Zimmer around, as one could infer from how he elevates the adventurous sense of wonder in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but it is clear that he is happy to provide service to them since the film that earned him his sole Academy Award for composing was this animated classic.

A period drama showing the life of an African-American man sold into slavery. The movie is emotional and with a powerful story. For such a story, a soundtrack and score of equal magnitude is required. Hans Zimmer provides us just that.
