May 23, 2024 · Cadillac Mountain is a popular destination for visitors to Acadia National Park. Accessible by car, it is the highest point on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and offers magnificent views of a glaciated coastal and island landscape.

In the summer, vehicle reservations are requiredfor Cadillac Summit Road. Vehicle reservations are not required for any other areas of the park, or for visitors who enter the area by foot, bike, or taxi. Reservations are not required for winter visits. Make your reservation online at Recreation.gov and download the QR code for offline access.
Cadillac Summit Road is located off the Park Loop Road, and can be accessed at the beginning or end of the loop. It is a windy, paved 3.5 miles up to the summit. Be aware of road cyclists and visitors on and alongside the road. No RVs or trailers are allowed up Cadillac Summit Road.
The summit parking area becomes congested with autos and tour buses most of the summer, and visitors crowd a short summit walkway and the overlooks. Be cautious of people crossing from every direction when approaching and in the parking lots.
There is no public transportation up to the summit. If you plan to hike up, you must return back down the trail to an Island Explorer shuttle stop or parking area. It is not advisable to walk down the Cadillac Summit Rd, especially with heavy use by vehicles, bicyclists, and motor coaches.
Are you planning a visit to Acadia National Park? Before you get here, it's important to know the difference between an entrance pass for the whole park, and a vehicle reservation just to drive up to the summit of Cadillac Mountain. You can buy both before you leave home at Recreation.gov.
Cadillac Mountain is a must-see within Acadia National Park in Maine. At 1,527 feet, it's the highest peak on the East Coast. Reach the summit on a hike through the lush pine forest, or take a leisurely drive up and park at the overlook.

- Gorge Trail. Length: 3.5 miles. Elevation Gain: 1,241 feet. Difficulty: moderate. Trail type: out-and-back. This shady route up the chasm between Cadillac and Dorr Mountains is a great choice for sunny summer days, when you’d rather escape the heat.
- South Ridge Trail. Length: 6.3 miles. Elevation Gain: 1,370 feet. Difficulty: moderate. trail type: out-and-back. Earn your lobster on the South Ridge Trail, which climbs sharply to Cadillac’s broad ridge crest.
- Dorr Mountain Loop. Length: 8.8 miles. Elevation Gain: 3,298 feet. Difficulty: difficult. Trail type: loop. From the Sieur de Monts Spring Nature Center, head southwest on the trail that switchbacks up the lower slopes of Dorr Mountain past intermittent views of the Porcupine Islands and Frenchman Bay.
