This figure represents the highest number of executions that Amnesty International has recorded in close to a decade (since 2015, when 1,634 executions were recorded).

During 2021, the number of prisoners under sentence of death declined for the 21st consecutive year. A total of 16 prisoners were received under sentence of death in 2021, one more than was reported in 2020.
Based on 2021 data from the Death Penalty Information Center, 141 countries have abolished capital punishment in some capacity (i.e. totally, for ordinary crimes, or in practice), and 55 countries permit capital punishment. Current data also shows that there were 579 executions carried out in 2021 by 18 countries.
