Prince Karl Christian Joseph of Saxony - in English, Charles of Saxony - (13 July 1733 – 16 June 1796) was a German prince of the House of Wettin and Duke of Courland and Semigallia. Born in Dresden, he was the fifth son of Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and Maria Josepha of Austria.
Gotthard Kettler, [4] the last Master of the Livonian Order, became the first duke of Courland. Other members of the Order became the Couronian nobility, with the fiefdoms they had hitherto held becoming their estates. In all, Kettler received nearly one-third of the land in the new duchy.

In 1758 he was elected to succeed the former Duke of Courland, Ernst Johann von Biron, who had been unseated for his extravagant and autocratic habits. However, in 1763 he was himself dethroned and replaced by Biron, by the influence of Empress Katharina of Russia.
