San Miniato al Monte (St. Minias on the Mountain) is a basilica in Florence, central Italy, standing atop one of the highest points in the city. It has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most scenic churches in Italy.
May 19, 2024 · Close to Piazzale Michelangelo, there is a small Romanesque church on the hill: the Basilica San Miniato al Monte. The church was built as early as 1015 on top of the tomb of Saint Minias, a martyr of Christianity, who was beheaded by Emperor Decius in the third century.

San Miniato al Monte, three-aisled basilican church in Florence completed in 1062. It is considered one of the finest examples of the Tuscan Romanesque style of architecture. The black and white marble panels used to ornament both the interior and the exterior, as well as the painted timber truss.

- Marble Facade. San Miniato has Florence’s emblematic geometric white and green marble facade. The gorgeous facade gives you a preview of what you’ll see inside.
- San Miniato Interior. When you walk through the turquoise doors, you’ll find a rather dark interior. It’s a bit difficult to see inside the church. Let your eyes adjust.
- The Crypt. The arches lead you down underground to the crypt, the realm of the dead. If you descend into the crypt area, perhaps the church’s main highlight, you’ll find a mystical ancient space.
- The Presbytery and Apse Mosaics. If you leave the crypt area and make your way up the stairs, you’ll land in the Presbytery. That was the choir area reserved for the priests.
May 24, 2024 · The church is open for Mass from Monday to Saturday at 7 am; opening for tourists, however, is at 9:30 am. On Sundays, it opens at 8:15 am. In winter, it closes at 7 pm, while in summer, it extends to 8 pm. There’s a magical place not far from the heart of Florence and its Renaissance art.
