In 1955, we see the first version of the classic “six eye” label appear. This label has 3 CBS eyes on each side of the label. “Columbia” is written in white on the top of the label, and the LP symbol appears on the bottom of the label 1958 would see the introduction of the Stereophonic LP.

Variations in color denote types of music. Black was standard fare while blue became premium. The sun and green show E prefixed ones denote "ethnic" recordings and the examples below are Italian (brown) and Lithuanian (green).
Oct 11, 2015 · To try to do a complete album discography for the Columbia label is probably a lifetime of work. However, while I was working for Sony back in 1991, I took the opportunity to look up the first 150 12-inch albums they issued, along with their release dates and a sampling of matrix numbers for dates.
Columbia Records, one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers of phonographs and records was founded in 1888, they began producing disc records in 1901. During the 1910s and 1920s, Columbia was one of the most prevalent record labels in the United States, along with Victor and Brunswick.
This format survived for eight years. Numerous variants are found, including a pink Grand Opera label, and various color schemes for export series. Perhaps the most unusual variant did not use a paper label, but had embossed information in the center area (e.g., some copies of A5110). The raised lettering was highlighted in gold.
Columbia Records is the oldest brand name in recorded sound. Founded in January 1889 in Washington DC as the Columbia Phonograph Co. by Edward D. Easton, the company first sold phonograph cylinders and later disc records.
