On March 5th, 1794, Onondaga County officially became New York’s 21st county. It was originally comprised of 1.75 million acres and included townships of the Military Tract (bounty land for soldiers who fought in the American Revolution).

The Onondaga live mostly on Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada, and the Onondaga Indian Reservation in New York State. In the 1980s they numbered approximately 1,500.
