Edmund was the eldest son of Owen Tudor and Catherine of Valois (widow of Henry V and mother of Henry VI). He was born around 1430 in Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, and is sometimes known as Edmund of Hadham.
Brought up in England under the tutelage of his royal half-brother, Henry VI, by whom he was created earl of Richmond in 1452-3, he had no connection with Wales until after his marriage in 1455 to the lady Margaret Beaufort, daughter of John Beaufort, duke of Somerset.
