Busch Memorial Stadium (Busch Stadium II) was a multi-purpose sports facility in St. Louis, Missouri, that operated for 40 years, from 1966 through 2005. Built as Civic Center Busch Memorial Stadium, its official name was shortened to Busch Stadium in January 1982.

The Cardinals wanted a new ballpark after playing at Sportsman’s Park for more than four decades. In the early 1960s Anheuser-Busch pledged $5 million toward the $20 million stadium project. On May 24, 1964 ground was broken for a stadium on 30 acres in downtown St. Louis. The Cardinals played their first game on May 12, 1966 at Busch Stadium.
On April 10, 2006, the Cardinals opened their new 46,000 seat retro-style downtown ballpark with a 6-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. David Eckstein collected the first Cardinals hit in the new Busch Stadium, and Albert Pujols hit the Redbirds first homerun.
May 14, 2016 · Mike Shannon and Jerry Buchek, the only St. Louis natives among the players on the 1966 Cardinals, had special roles in the first game played at Busch Memorial Stadium. On May 12, 1966, Shannon produced the first Cardinals hit and the first Cardinals RBI in the debut game at the $26 million circular stadium in downtown St. Louis.
A 17-year old caught the first home run ever hit at Busch Memorial Stadium, launched by the Atlanta Braves’ Felipe Alou. He was willing to part with it for $50.
