Tree up to 35 m. tall; trunk up to 2 m. diam., with plank-buttresses at base; bark pale; ultimate branchlets tetragonous, sparsely hairy. novae-zelandiae from the Kermadec Islands is said to have uniformly green fronds lacking red colour when fresh, and sometimes lacks black spots in the stipe and rachis scales (de Lange 2020). It is not recognised here as a distinct taxon, but may warrant further investigation.
