Back in 1984, Tim Burton crafted Frankenweenie, a live-action short film about about a boy who uses the power of science to bring his pet pooch back to life. Burton was working at Disney at the time, and the dark and seemingly uncommercial nature of the short contributed to his eventual departure from the company.

Now, nearly 30 years on, and in the wake of the $1 billion that Burton's Alice in Wonderland made for the Mouse House, Disney has given Burton the opportunity to revisit the story in feature-length stop-motion form, and the resulting movie is his finest work in years.

The plot remains very much the same, revolving around young Victor Frankenstein and his beloved dog Sparky. Victor is the kind of character found in pretty much every Tim Burton movie – an outsider who feels little connection with society, the alienated youngster never happier than when shooting monster movies with his four-legged friend.

Tim Burton triumphs with this stunning stop-motion animated horror film, based on his 1984 short, about a boy who brings his beloved dog back to life.
