A basic google search returns a huge number of researchgate and quora pages asking for FLOSS options, while a bunch of freemium spyware have been suggested instead.

  3. Turnitin is a paid level software so a free alternative comparison wouldn't make sense. For a licensed alternative though, I've mostly used Plagiarism Checker X, it is quite thorough against public access academic sources and the unlimited scanning is a big plus.
