Mar 2, 2024 · William A. Knowlton, 88, a retired four-star General who during four decades of military duty was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, died August 10, 2008, at Virginia Hospital Center of intracranial bleeding as a result of a fall.
Aug 10, 2008 · He returned to the United States and became the Secretary of the Army General Staff, Washington DC, and on March 23, 1970 he became the 49th Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point, and in 1974, he was assigned back to Europe as the Chief of Staff of the US European Command.
After his tenure with the academy, General William Knowlton was assigned command of the Allied Land Forces in Europe. When General Knowlton retired from service, he continued to lecture at the Armed Forces Staff College and act as an advisor for the Defense Nuclear Agency.
General William Allen Knowlton died on 10 August 2008. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. He was survived by his wife, Marjorie Downey Knowlton and by a daughter, Hollister Knowlton Petraeus.
