His wife Gertrude was also an avid sailor and served on the crew of the “Rainbow” during its winning effort in 1937. In recognition of their accomplishments, both Harold Vanderbilt and his wife Gertrude were posthumously elected to the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1993.
Harold Stirling Vanderbilt died in 1970. He and his wife, Gertrude Conway Vanderbilt, are interred at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery in Portsmouth, their graves marked with only a simple flat stone.
During that series Vanderbilt’s wife, Gertude, called the time at the start, thereby becoming the first woman to race on a Cup defender. A year later, Vanderbilt and two associates began a complete re-write of the racing rules of sailing.
