   Why was Monroe important in the 1700s?

   • The damming of the Ramapo and the construction of the grist mill in the mid 1700’s signaled the beginnings of permanent settlement and the establishment of a new town. The Orange Turnpike, connecting Albany to New York City brought stage coach access to Monroe in 1807, and the town quickly became an important stopover point.

   Why was the village of Monroe created?

   • The Village of Monroe was established from a small farming community after a disastrous fire destroyed nearly all the buildings at the heart of the settlement. The village and its boundaries were created in 1894 as a result of the need to establish a volunteer fire district to avoid such future calamities.

   • The Community House Originally built in 1874 by Martin Konnight, a man prominent in Monroe’s early history, the building was called Konnight Hall and served as an entertainment center. It was later to become the Monroe Opera House until it was purchased by a group of citizens and converted to a community house in the 1920’s.
