Jan 4, 2022 · The Bible’s story of Queen Vashti is set in about 480 BC. In Esther 1 a great feast is being held for the men of Susa, the citadel from which Xerxes reigned over a large region of the ancient world from India to Ethiopia to Asia Minor.
Vashti, high-born, powerful and intelligent, was affronted by her husband’s command – as well she might be. Reared to be queen, she was being treated as a common prostitute. She probably guessed it was a trap, and that whatever she did, she would be the victim.
Vashti was a noble queen and a vicious antisemite; a traditional Persian princess and a proto-feminist agitator. Perhaps she was equally at home in sweeping ball gowns and low-rise comfy pants, and perhaps she was so in touch with her inner beauty that she would have walked the runway wearing nothing at all.
Queen Vashti is mentioned only once in the Bible. She is often an overlooked woman in the Scripture because her story is attached to that of Esther whose story overshadows Vashti’s. Yet, Vashti’s story holds some powerful, practical life lessons for women.
