Shealtiel (Hebrew: שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל, Shəʾaltīʾēl), transliterated in Greek as Salathiel (Koinē Greek: Σαλαθιηλ, Salăthiēl), was the son of King Jehoiachin and the father of Zerubbabel.
Early Life
Shealtiel presumably was born to Jehoiachin and a unknown mother, in Babylon; since Jehoiachin was delivered to Babylon mentioning no sons. He was under God's judgment and the curse of his father concerning his descendants never going to the throne of David. He grew up serving as a slave in Babylon instead of living the royal life of a heir, due to his father's disobedience. He might have turned to Yahweh and thwarted his worshipping of the idols of his father since his son, Zerubbabel was faithful to the Lord and used to fulfill his plan. It is likely he was a Governor whom Zerubbabel succeeded, though contradictory since Sheshbazzar was the predecessor.
Father of Zerubbabel
It has been a debate whether he or his brother, Pedaiah was the father of Zerubbabel. The prophetic scrolls and the gospels consider him as the father. While the scrolls of the First Book of Chronicles (dated c. 400-300 B.C) consider his brother as the father. It is more likely that Shealtiel was the father since other accounts corresponds to eachother and is contemporary. The text which identifies Zerubbabel as a son of Pedaiah could be a scribal error. It occurs in a part of the text where the Hebrew seems incongruent and possibly garbled.
Death
He was more likely dead before God used his son to fulfill his glory and mercy, since he was not named at the rebuilding of the Second Temple. But it is more likely for him to be alive at that time.
It is likely that he had good influence upon his son Zerubbabel, considering that they had quite their idolatry. His historicity is only referred as a link from Abraham to Jesus which is confirmed by Luke the Evangelist and Matthew the Apostle.
