A complete outline will be your road map to writing—and, more importantly, finishing —your book fast. Here’s what an outline looks like: A number or letter precedes each point or subpoint. Each time you add a new point or subpoint, the word processor will add a new letter or number in the proper sequence.
- Do some reconnaissance reading. Unless I know my topic inside and out, I start with a little reconnaissance reading. I head to Google and look at what others have written on my topic.
- Write down your objective. Now that you’ve figured out an angle, it’s helpful to write down an objective. What do you want the reader to understand by the end of this article?
- Create a list of all the main points you want to make. I often begin this step while I’m doing my recon reading and ideas are popping into my head. This can be a quick brainstorming process.
- Organize, revise, and eliminate. Now it’s time to organize the list of points. Figure out the structure of your article. Will it work well as numbered how-to steps?
- Argumentative essays. Here is an example outline argumentative essay: Title: Italian Ice is a Superior Dessert to Ice Cream. Introduce the differences between Italian ice and ice cream, touch on how popular each is.
- Admissions essays. Take a look at this admissions essay outline: Title: Arigato, Sato Sensei. My Japanese teacher was the most influential teacher I had in high school because she taught me more than just a language—she taught me how language shapes perspective.
- Persuasive essays. Here’s an example of a persuasive essay outline: Title: We Need More Security Cameras in the Student Parking Deck. Vehicle break-ins are far too common on campus.
- Personal essays. Here is an outline example for a personal essay: Title: The Two Best Birthdays of my Life. Introducing your feelings about birthdays and how you like to celebrate yours.
