The purpose of writing a summary is to explain to others, in a concise and clear way, what you have read without adding your own opinion. Step One: Read the piece through once.
To do so, you will need to incorporate a brief summary of, paraphrase of, or quote from the source. You might even spend two or three sentences laying out the author’s position. Respond to the author’s ideas.
• Write a one or two sentence summary of each section. • Formulate a single sentence to summarize the whole text, looking at the author's thesis or topic sentences as a guide. • Write a paragraph (or more): begin with the overall summary sentence and follow it with the section summary sentences.
