Sometimes, film shoots can go on for months, but that certainly wasn't the case when it came to this movie. To keep the budget as low as possible, all the footage was shot in just eight days. However, it then took another eight months to edit the movie according to the film's official site.
The Blair Witch Project was a story about three young filmmakers getting lost in the woods, so to prevent them from actually getting lost, the actors were given walkie-talkies to keep in touch. You would think this would have helped, but they still ended up getting lost three timeswhile shooting.
The three lead actors in The Blair Witch Projectwere led to believe that the Blair Witch was a bonafide legend. So while they knew that the movie was obviously fake, they thought the myth was based on accounts by real people. In reality, it was completely fabricated by the film's creator.

When the actors were sent to interview the townspeople, they had no idea that they were actors too. As far as the lead actors knew, the people they were talking to about the Blair Witch were genuinely familiar with the myth. So those surprised looks on Heather's face were 100% real!
To keep up the fear factor, the lead actors decided to stay in character for the duration of filming. If one of them needed to break character for any reason the other two would also do the same, but only after they all recited their safety word which was "taco." According to IMDb, there was no script for The Blair Witch Project. The actors were given a slim document containing information about the mythology of the Blair Witch, the general movie plot, and that was it. With no lines to learn, almost all the dialogue was improvised by the actors as they went along.
