But ABC refused to do that and was very clear on their position.
He was reportedly suffering from depression and had been drinking heavily when he shot himself. Upon learning of Duel's death, executive producer Jo Swerling Jr. initially wanted to end the series, but ABC refused.: 27–28 Swerling later stated: ABC said, "No way!"

ABC threatened to sue him and the entire cast for breach of contract prompting a reversal from Swerling. The day after the death the cast was reassembled and shooting resumed using Roger Davis to substitute Duel. X.
