Joan is the only known illegitimate daughter of King John of England (c. 1167-1216) by an unknown mother who is identified in the Tewkesbury annals as 'queen Clemencia'. Though many claims as to who Joan's mother was remain unsubstantiated, the closest contender continues to be Clemence de Verdun (fl. 1228-1230).
