Elizabeth was the only daughter and heiress of John of Görlitz, the third son of Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. The Duchy of Luxemburg was mortgaged to her by her uncle King Sigismund of Hungary. She ruled with her husbands Antony, Duke of Brabant (1411-15) and John of Bavaria (1418-25).
Although the autonomy of Görlitz Land ended in 1329 (shortly revived under Duke John of Görlitz between 1377 and 1396), it permanently divided the Upper Lusatian nobility and the municipal administration. In Görlitz Land henceforth own meetings nobility took place, which also remained the case after the reunification of the two countries.
