May 3, 2024 · Born circa 1468, John of Gloucester was an illegitimate son of King Richard III of England (reigned 1483 – 1485) and an unknown mother. He was called “of Gloucester” because his father was the Duke of Gloucester at the time of his birth.
It is not known when, or how, John died though there is a suggestion he was privately executed to stop him being used as a figurehead by rebels. John of Pontefract, the illegitimate son of Richard III was appointed as Captain of Calais on 11th March 1485.

Richard had two acknowledged illegitimate children, John of Gloucester and Katherine Plantagenet. Also known as 'John of Pontefract', John of Gloucester was appointed Captain of Calais in 1485. Katherine married William Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, in 1484. Neither the birth dates nor the names of the mothers of either of the children are known.
