When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the US presence in Germany was a stunning 250,000 soldiers with as many civilian employees and family members. The soldiers and their families worked and lived in one of 47 major military bases, which were made up by some 800 separate sites.
There was a new triple-depth fence, motion detectors, 24-hour illumination, modern expensive locks were installed on the bunkers, and six new high-security bunkers were built. There is a 1.3 km trail around Area 1, with 13 detailed information boards that explain the history and usage.
