Russell is best known for his Academy Award -winning romantic drama film Women in Love (1969); the historical drama horror film The Devils (1971); the musical fantasy film Tommy (1975), featuring the Who; and the science fiction horror film Altered States (1980).
He began by making several short films which paved the way for his brilliant television films of the 1960s that are acclaimed for his attention to detail and opulent visuals. His third feature film Women in Love (1969) was a triumph that made him known internationally. In the 1970s, his talent truly blossomed.

- 'The Devils' (1971) Starring: Oliver Reed, Vanessa Redgrave, Dudley Sutton. Despite being called The Devils, this earth-shattering 1971 film is more of a drama than it is a horror movie, though it’s grisly and disturbing enough in parts to qualify, at least in part, as a work of horror.
