During the Battle of Saipan, a Japanese fire rained down on Lee Marvin and other members of his company. Marvin was one of the few survivors, and the ordeal earned him a Purple Heart. Oct 16, 2023 · While he was best known for his Western roles, Lee Marvin appeared in several military and war films. His prior military service came in handy on-set, with him able to assist with costume design, the portrayal of infantry movements and the use of firearms.
The attached photograph was purchased directly from the son of a 4th Marine veteran who served with Marvin during WWII. Lee was a combat sniper with I Company, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division and was wounded in action on Saipan. He received the Purple Heart for his wounds.
