The Liberty Statue or Freedom Statue (Hungarian: Szabadság-szobor [ˈsɒbɒtt͡ʃaːɡ ˈsobor]) is a monument at the east end of the Citadella on Gellért Hill in Budapest, Hungary. It commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and prosperity of Hungary.
As a beacon of hope dominating the city’s skyline, this statue offers a historical lesson and a symbol of enduring liberty. A Monument with a Multifaceted Past. Inaugurated in 1947, the Liberty Statue originally commemorated the Soviet liberation of Hungary from Nazi occupation.
First erected in 1947, it was to commemorate the Soviet troops that liberated Hungary during the war but was later changed to those who sacrificed their lives for independence. Its on an iconic spot overlooking the city on Gellert hill. It has commanding views over the city and castle hill and is well worth the effort for the views alone.
