The story is set in the 1890s and begins when three outlaws Jesse Coe (Martin Landau), Bill Bowdre (Arthur Kennedy) and Tom Fitch (Karl Malden) viciously rob, torture and kill the parents of young Max Sand (Steve McQueen).
Nevada Smith is the young son of an Indian mother and white father. When his father is killed by three men over gold, Nevada sets out to find them and kill them. The boy is taken in by a gun merchant. The gun merchant shows him how to shoot and to shoot on time and correct.
The opening scene of Nevada Smith features Steve McQueen, Arthur Kennedy, Martin Landau and Karl Malden. It was like Henry Hathaway was saying, "Yeah, I've got a MASSIVE fucking cast here and I'm going to use it!"

Sep 4, 2014 · One scene that stands out is when Nevada Smith is fighting the bad guy played by Martin Landau in a cattle pen. McQueen opens one of the gates to let the cattle out and they stampede out quicker than expected, knocking over a fence and very nearly trampling the star of the movie.
