Quebec City’s old town is a great place to start your exploration of the city. This historic area is home to winding streets, charming shops and restaurants, and beautiful architecture. It’s reminiscent of a European town, from the cobblestone streets to the many cafes lining the streets. Browse the local shops or sit and people watch at a cafe and soak up the charm of Old Quebec.
2. Take a Walk through the Old City Walls
The old city walls are one of the most iconic things about Quebec City. They were built in the 17th century to protect the city from invaders, and today they offer a great way to see some of the historic sights. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it’s the only North American city to have preserved its ramparts. The walled city is one of the only remaining fortified city walls in North America.
3. Stroll through the Petit Champlain Quarter
The Petit Champlain Quarter is one of the most charming areas of Quebec City. This family friendly pedestrian-only area is full of boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to do some shopping or stop for a bite to eat. Be sure to check out some of the unique outdoor art installations! Quebec is a large city and with that, there are lots of areas of stay. Of course, there is Old Quebec, which is the most convenient for exploring the Old Town but there are also plenty of other areas a short drive away.
- Château Frontenac. See the world’s most photographed hotel in person. Rising up from a clifftop, the iconic Château Frontenac has been the crown jewel of the Old City for over 125 years now.
- Terrasse Dufferin. Take a turn on a hotspot with an amazing view. Summer on the Dufferin terrace is a whirlwind of singers and entertainers busking and strutting their stuff.
- Petit-Champlain. Fall in love with Canada’s prettiest pedestrian street. If the European charm of this ravishing, exclusively pedestrian street doesn’t enchant you, the shopkeepers will.
- Place Royale. Explore the place where Québec City was founded. Place Royale is the spot where, in 1608, Samuel de Champlain built what became the first permanent French settlement in North America.
- Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. One place that I love is the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency and its impressive waterfall. The waterfall is even taller than Niagara Falls!
- Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec. The Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec is a special elevator that links Quebec’s Upper Town at Terrasse Dufferin to the Lower Town in the Quartier Petit Champlain.
- Citadelle de Québec. The Citadelle de Quebec is an impressive fortress in Old Quebec City. It’s on the Cap Diamant hill. This place is unique because it’s the largest British fortress in North America.
- Martello Towers. The Martello Towers in Quebec City are old defense towers. There are four of them, and they were built in the 1800s to protect the city from attacks.

The Aquarium is home to Nordic animals and a large number of fish species from all around the globe. The largest tank features a walk-through tunnel (a big highlight for the kids!), and there are tactical sections where kids can touch starfish, urchins and rays.
