Roger Ebert January 01, 1982. Tweet. Now streaming on: Powered by JustWatch. "The Thing" is a great barf-bag movie, all right, but is it any good? I found it disappointing, for two reasons: the superficial characterizations and the implausible behavior of the scientists on that icy outpost.
The Thing is supposed to be scary, and for the most part, it isn't. That's a failure by horror standards. There's some face-value entertainment to be had here, but if you're looking for a substantial prequel to Carpenter's masterpiece, you'll be sorely disappointed. 173 out of 227 found this helpful.

Aug 29, 2016 · Thanks to VHS and cable, The Thing had a second wind, with many former critics eating their words and others singing its praises (it now is 80% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes). Not to mention all the filmmakers who were inspired by Carpenter’s dark vision; Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight wouldn’t even exist without its influence .
