His parents had fled to East Prussia after the occupation of Berlin by Napoleon, and Albert was born in Königsberg.

Prince of Prussia and soldier and Generaloberst, Albrecht was the fourth and youngest child of King Friedrich Wilhelm III and Queen Luise von Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Albrecht's two brothers were also Prussian Kings, Friedrich Wilhelm IV 1840-61, and Wilhelm I 1861-88 (German Emperor beginning in 1871).
