From then on the cell theory, in spite of its "inadequacies," supplied the framework of much of the most important biological thinking and re- search.
Among them, Henri Dutrochet (1776–1847), a self-taught French medical doctor, is probably the least recognized. The aim of this article is to relate the life of this independent investigator and show his contribution to the identification of the cell as the basic building block of plant and animal tissues.
The French botanist Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel (1776–1854) suggested that plants were constituted by a set of membranes with a lot of pores. A few years later, René Joachim Henri Dutrochet (1776–1847), who had discovered the osmotic phenomenon, claimed that cells constituted plants.
