Divided into 100 counties with humid subtropical climate; features sandy islands Outer Banks, Atlantic Coastal Plain (Tidewater region), Piedmont Plateau (hilly region between coastal plain and Appalachian Mountains), Blue Ridge Mountains/Great Smoky Mountains (densely forested mountain chains).
A major refuge for temperate zone flora/fauna that survived Pleistocene glaciations; covers over 200k ha centered on ridgeline Great Smoky Mountains subrange Appalachian chain; home to largest remains Arctic-Tertiary Geoflora once covered entire Northern Hemisphere.
Largest cities have population >100k include Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is second busiest airport after Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
