Though many regard Booker T. & The M.G’.s as the seminal backing ensemble tasked with providing the instrumental might that established Stax’s soul sound, the group doesn’t have the distinction as the label’s very first in-house band.
The Mar-Keys (originally named The Royal Spades) were the backing band on many early Stax releases but also recorded singles of their own. In 1962 the rhythm section more or less evolved into Booker T & The MG's and later the horn section into The Memphis Horns. from discogs
