May 14, 2017 · Tolkien’s fictive Middle-earth examples are Túrin Turambar, who is closely modelled on Kullervo, and his least likely tragic hero Frodo Baggins, whose journey and emotional trajectory from Bag End to Mount Doom take him through all of Aristotle’s norms set within the larger context of the history of Middle-earth, as do those of Túrin.
We’re told this idea was abandoned, and yet the idea of Turin coming back at the Last Battle emerges again in Andreth’s prophecy in HoME XII, which was written pretty late in Tolkien’s life IIRC. Of course, none of this, including the Sil and CoH is strictly canon, but the actual “canon” reference to Turin we get in LotR is positive.
Frodo is by far the most famous Tolkien hero, but only has his story told in tLotR and briefly referenced a few other places. Turin is the central hero of the entire mythology, being destined to slay Morgoth and 99% of the people who are familiar with Tolkien's world have never even heard of him.
