Valdemar IV Atterdag (the epithet meaning "Return of the Day"), Valdemar Christoffersen or Waldemar (c. 1320 – 24 October 1375) was King of Denmark from 1340 to 1375. [1] [2] He is mostly known for his reunion of Denmark after the bankruptcy and mortgaging of the country to finance wars under previous rulers.
In 1363, Valdemar IV renewed his alliance with Poland. He appointed his friend and advisor Henning Podebusk (c. 1350 – c. 1388) to negotiate with the Hanseatic League in his absence. They agreed to a truce so long as Valdemar acknowledged their right to free trade and fishing rights in the Sound.
Valdemar was buried in the Schleswig Cathedral. Marriage and issue. In 1287 Duke Valdemar married Elisabeth of Saxe-Lauenburg, a daughter of John I, Duke of Saxony. This marriage produced the only legitimate son of Duke Valdemar: Eric II (c. 1290 – 1325), Duke of Schleswig 1312–1325
