  3. Velma Bronn Johnston (often Johnson) (March 5, 1912 — June 27, 1977) was one of the voices responsible for gaining federal jurisdiction over wild horses and burros on public land. The Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act was signed into law in 1971 after passing both Houses of Congress without a dissenting vote.
