When Venice was an independent republic (between the 9th and 18th centuries), the Venetian language enjoyed considerable prestige. However literary Venetian lost out to the Tuscan dialect, which eventually became the national language of Italy. Today Venetian has no official status in Italy but is recognised by the Regional Council of Vèneto.
Their language evolved relatively independent from other Romance languages. It became a distinct language called Dalmatian language. The earliest reference on the language dates from the 10th century. According to the linguist Matteo Bartoli about 50,000 people spoke it at that time.
