The Gair Affair was an episode in Australian political life in 1974, during the government led by the Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.Whitlam offered the post of Ambassador to Ireland to a non-government senator from Queensland, Vince Gair, in the hope that this would improve Labor's chance of gaining a majority in the Senate at the forthcoming general election.

Vincent Clare (Clair) Gair (1901-1980), railway clerk and premier, was born on 25 February 1901 at Rockhampton, Queensland, eighth child of John Alexander Gair, a prison warder from Scotland, and his wife Catherine Mary, née Maguire (d.1950), a nurse from Ireland.

John Gair immigrated to Queensland from Scotland in 1885, where he had worked as a publican and hospital orderly. He was a ‘strict disciplinarian’ and ‘a life-long supporter of the Labour Party’, but the principal parental influence on young Vince seems to have been his Irish-born mother.
