The Votivkirche (English: Votive Church) is a neo-Gothic style church located on the Ringstraße in Vienna, Austria. Following the attempted assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853, the Emperor's brother Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian inaugurated a campaign to create a church to thank God for saving the Emperor's life.
The church has the feel of a medieval English cathedral, all tall spires (almost 100m high), wide spaces inside, and stained glass windows. But there’s the touch of an unloved stepchild about it. As if the Viennese and visitors know it’s there but have never really embraced it as part of the famous historical infrastructure of the city.
After two decades of renovation, the Votive Church shines in new splendor. The neo-Gothic building on the Ringstrasse was built as a token of gratitude for a failed attempt to assassinate Emperor Franz Joseph. The church's raised oratory also houses a museum with historic masterpieces.
