Portland has a lot of interesting neighborhoods ready to be explored, and we hope it’s not too overwhelming deciding where to stay in Portland. In general, it’s a very safe city and is extremely tourist friendly — you don’t need to worry about finding yourself in a ‘bad’ area if you stick to these suggestions. Public transportation in Portland is excellent, and most locals don’t even have cars because the city transit is so well thought out! The best Portland neighborhoods are readily accessible from the MAX (Metropolitan Area Express), the cheapest and easiest way to get around at $2.50 one way, or $5.00 for the day. The public bus system is great, too,...

- North Portland. Located west of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, between the Willamette and Columbia rivers, North Portland is a mix of old and new. The most popular spots are the historically Black neighborhoods of North Williams and North Mississippi avenues — parallel streets with several blocks each of not-to-miss spots.
- Northeast Portland. Perhaps no place embodies the diversity of the city quite like Northeast Portland, located on the east side of Martin Luther King Jr.
- Southeast Portland. Stretching across the area south of Burnside Street and east of the Willamette River, Southeast Portland includes family-friendly attractions like the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and natural spaces like Mt.
- South Portland. Located on the west bank of the Willamette River, the South Waterfront is known for its high-rise buildings, riverfront shops, elegant restaurants, wine bars, coffee shops and cafes.
- Pearl District. Perfect for young professionals looking to be in the middle of the hippest and hottest area in Portland. Chic, artistic, lively... urban living at its finest.
- Northwest District. Perfect for young professionals looking for a classy, luxurious life with all the shopping you can dream of. NW 23rd Avenue, also known as Trendy-Third Avenue, is one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Portland–think sophistication, luxury, and class.
- Hosford-Abernathy & Hawthorne. Perfect for young people looking for an affordable and buzzing neighborhood with its own unique personality. Now for our top three neighborhood finalists.
- Sellwood-Moreland. Perfect for those looking for a relaxed and safe community with lots of history. Sellwood-Moreland is a neighborhood with a small-town neighborly vibe.
- Elizabeth Brownfield
- Pearl District. If you’ve already heard of one neighborhood in Stumptown, chances are it’s the Pearl. After all, the formerly grungy warehouse district next to downtown is now the city’s most polished gem (think of it as Portland’s version of NYC’s SoHo or DUMBO).
- Downtown. You’ll find the bulk of the city’s hotel options downtown, ranging from classic (The Heathman), hipster (Ace), trendy (The Nines), and lots of great options that somehow manage to toe the line between all three categories (Dossier, Monaco, Lucia, and Modera, which are housed in historical buildings but have modern interiors).
- NW 23rd. One of the Rose City’s best shopping streets is Northwest 23rd street, where charming shops and cafes line a stretch of about 20 blocks between Burnside and Vaughn streets spanning the Nob Hill/Alphabet/Northwest districts.
- SE Division. Southeast Division Street was fairly sleepy until Pok Pok came around. But Andy Ricker’s Asian BBQ joint — run out of his house — put both the street and Portland on the country’s culinary map.
Oct 15, 2023 · Cross any one of the numerous bridges to the east side of the river, which is far less populated, to make your trip a loop. You’ll pass by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), which is one of the best things to do in Portland with kids.
Our favorites are Ladd’s Addition, Hawthorne, Mount Tabor, Sunnyside, Reed, Sellwood-Moreland, and Richmond. The Southeast side of Portland, in general, is remarkably different to the Southwest. Where Portland’s Westside is refined but not stuffy, Portland’s Eastside is laid back and scrappy but still polished.
