With Mary, every Carmelite aims to have a loving care for God’s people, holding all their needs in the heart of their prayer. Carmelite prayer. Unlike many other spiritual traditions in the church, Carmelite prayer offers no “method,” no specific steps or stages for the praying person to follow.
The foundation of the Carmelite spiritual path is allegiance. The charism of Carmel does not exist outside the Church because it is a fruit of the Church whose life comes from Jesus Christ. The life of a Carmelite is one of a radical commitment to living out their baptism.
As a contemplative brotherhood, Carmelites seek the face of God also in the heart of the world. Carmel knows itself to be a living part of the Church and of history. Our Rule recommends that we always work but doesn’t stipulate what kind of work.
Carmelites speak of contemplation as a gift of God that can be nurtured by a life of prayer, community, and service. These three elements are at the heart of our charism. In prayer (or worship) we build up a friendship with ‘the God whom we know loves us’, as St. Teresa of Avila described it.
