A standard-gauge railway is a railway with a track gauge of 1,435 mm ( 4 ft 8⁄2 in ). The standard gauge is also called Stephenson gauge (after George Stephenson ), international gauge, UIC gauge, uniform gauge, normal gauge and European gauge in Europe, [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] and SGR in East Africa.
In North America, standard-gauge track uses wooden railroad ties which measure 8'6" (2.59m) in length, 7" (17.78cm) tall, and 9" (22.86cm) wide. The distance between the ties is typically 21" (53.34cm), so with 9"-wide ties that makes the gap between ties 12" (30.48cm).
