  1. Jun 19, 2023 · Louder. A beginner's guide to Sub Pop Records in five essential albums. By Maddy Howell. published 19 June 2023. Celebrated as the home of grunge, Sub Pop has evolved into one of America's most eclectic indie labels. Here is the Sub Pop story told via five key records. (Image credit: Sub Pop)

    • Green River – Dry As A Bone/Rehab Doll EP (1987) They featured Mudhoney’s Mark Arm and Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, and you can hear the starting point of both bands in Green River, with their mix of the former’s simple punk approach and the latter’s taste for stadium-ready guitar histrionics.
    • Soundgarden – Screaming Life (1987) While the general trope is that the grunge movement was trying to ‘kill’ the LA metal scene, Soundgarden proved quite the opposite: from day one they were out there giving metal a whole new lease of life.
    • Mudhoney – Superfuzz Bigmuff (1988) Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm was there right at the beginning with Green River, but it was Mudhoney (who he also fronted), with their debut Superfuzz Bigmuff that truly defined both the Seattle sound and Sub Pop’s manifesto.
    • Nirvana – Bleach (1989) With hindsight, it’s easy to see Bleach as merely Nirvana’s caustic baby steps. But the signs of stardom to come were already there, not least in the subtle, delicate About A Girl, which was so accomplished a song that it was chosen to open their Unplugged live set four years and two mega-selling albums later.
    • Nirvana – ‘Bleach’ Advertisement. How can we not start with Nirvana? Kurt Cobain might have only written the snarled lyrics on his band’s debut the night before recording when he was “pissed off”, but the attitude’s there.
    • The Postal Service – ‘Give Up’ Nodding towards the new wave and synths of the 80s, indie supergroup The Postal Service’s ‘Give Up’ was Sub Pop’s bestselling album since Nirvana’s ‘Bleach’.
    • Father John Misty – ‘Pure Comedy’ Josh Tillman – aka Father John Misty – may be as well-known for his wry stage persona (which he self-describes as “sarcastic Michael Bublé”) as his music, but ‘Pure Comedy’ offered up not only an intriguing character study to his semi-fictionalised self but also proved that his musical output was not to be overlooked.
    • Foals – ‘Total Life Forever’ The Oxford band’s second and final North American release on Sub Pop, Foals’ 2010 sophomore album remains a captivating listen to this day.
