They measure a child’s reading comprehension and fluency, using a variety of factors like phoneme awareness, decoding, vocabulary, and more. Teachers use reading levels to understand what a student knows and what they need to work on.
Another popular system used to measure a child’s reading ability and to level children’s books is the Lexile Framework. Lexile measures provide a child’s numbered reading level/ability, and when using the Lexile Framework which levels books on text complexity, we can “forecast reading comprehension”.
The Lexile level will always be shown as a number with an “L” after it — for example 770L = 770 Lexile. The higher the Lexile measure, the higher the student’s reading level.
