   How did Oglethorpe County get its name?

   • 1733 Oglethorpe county is named in honor of Gen James E. Oglethorpe, who founded Georgia. Gen. Oglethorpe, (Dec. 22, 1696-July, 1785) left England at the age of 38 with 116 settlers. They arrived in Yamacraw, 1733 and settled in Savannah area. Later Oglethorpe brought 150 more Scotch Highlanders and German Protestants from Salzburg.
